Language Partner

So I finally met my language partner! She's very sweet- her name is 吕莹 . Her given name is the name for a precious jade stone apparently. Anyway, I took her out to dinner with someone and her language partner but we both agreed we didn't take them somewhere fancy enough. We'll have to do better next time. We're going to meet three times a week so I should be speaking Chinese in no time! ;)
On another note, I was supposed to have an interview today with the radio station but my stomach wasn't doing well. Something similar happened last year when I arrived here so I'm not worried about it. I ended up sleeping through most of the day. I didn't go to class either because we were going to walk around to a bank and I really didn't feel like walking around would be such a good idea.
Tomorrow we're required to go on a scavenger hunt of (I think) the school. I'm in a group with Allegra, Nicholas, and Cheyenne. Allegra speaks Chinese really well so I feel like we'll get wherever we need to be really quickly. Nicholas is one of only two people below me in Chinese language proficiency. It is so sad I'm not farther along.
Staying with a Chinese family would certainly improve my language skills but I'm scared. I mean, what if we don't get along?! It's not just for a week- it's for nearly two months! There's also the extra $550 fee to think about which is supposed to be for the Chinese family to pay for our daily meals. My language skills would definitely improve... I'll have to seriously think about it.

Internship Possibility

Marketus called me about a possible internship and says "Hey, would you be interested in working for a radio station? I know you wanted to do ESL stuff but I have this. You'd be editing news reports and if you're good enough they may let you broadcast."
I thought, that sounds like fun! I even mentioned that my dad used to be a DJ on the radio (he did music though, not news) which he seemed to think worked in my favor.
Anyway, he sends me an email with the website address  and tells me my interview will be on Friday at 3pm. I check out the website which is entirely in Chinese and made me believe the radio station was specifically for foreigners in Beijing. However, after looking at it more thoroughly I noticed there was a section for learning English. Why would an English foreigner need to learn English?
Then my possible boss sent me an email that he also sent to Marketus, stating that because I would be at the station so little I would be difficult to place, however, they decided I would perform street interviews for the station. My possible boss is Chinese and his associate doesn't speak any English.
Now I'm freaking out! Street interviews?! Boy are they in for a surprise when they find out how poor my Chinese skills are! I sent an email to Marketus making sure he hasn't mistaken me with someone else again and knows this. Don't get me wrong- I like the idea. My skills would definitely improve having to really use my Chinese, however, I feel like I need to be at a higher level just to perform the task!
Just when I think I couldn't be more nervous....

By the way, I learned the word for "nervous" in Chinese is 紧张

Classes in China

Okay, so Chinese class wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. The little bit of previewing I did was just enough that I made it through the class. I managed to speak enough but I had the hardest time paying attention. I wasn't very focused at all. I seriously need to work on that- probably had something to do with the fact I was hungry. That and the class is almost 3 hours long and psychologists say that after 45 minutes the brain stops taking in information. I really like her teaching style- there's just enough emphasis on grammar and vocabulary that I feel like I'm seeing the whole picture. I love most of all how she writes the words on the board that we don't understand or know off the top of our heads so I can look them up later or at least practice them.
Afterward I was supposed to have an interview about an internship but Marketus, our Resident Director, mistook me for someone else so I was able to sit in our contemporary China class in its entirety. He's definitely a knowledgeable professor with a lot of experience (which he's happy to discuss with anyone and everyone). There's a lot of reading but we only meet once a week so I think I'll be able to manage.
I found out a couple people have been to the dining hall and the food is decent. The prices range from 5 to 13 kuai and rice comes with the meal. I'll have to make sure to eat there tomorrow.
Tonight all of those interested in the internships are meeting someone who's supposed to be in charge of us, I think. I don't know. I kind of hope it's quick because of Chinese homework, plus I need to preview the lesson for tomorrow.
